Concept

Rest and Become presents a lotus flower and leaf resting together upon a grounded stone form.

Their placement creates a quiet centre, where balance is held through stillness rather than movement.

The work is built around the idea of refuge. The forms do not compete for attention.
Instead, they exist in a state of calm relationship, offering a unified presence.The sculpture translates the experience of arrival, rest, and renewal into physical form.

Material & Surface

The sculpture is fabricated in cast bronze, paired with a natural Forbes granite boulder. The bronze surfaces are finished with a sealed patina, allowing subtle variation in tone while responding to light and weather.

These surfaces are intentional. They absorb and soften light rather than reflect it, reinforcing the work’s sense of calm and permanence.

The granite retains its natural character, grounding the sculpture within the landscape. Together, the materials ensure durability in exterior conditions while maintaining a quiet, refined presence.

Dialogue

The elements are distinct yet interdependent, resting within a shared composition. The stone anchors the work, while the lotus forms appear to emerge and settle simultaneously.

Their relationship is one of stillness and support, where balance is held without tension. The sculpture proposes that strength can exist in quietness, that renewal can emerge from rest, and that calm can hold meaning within a broader journey.

In this way, the work speaks of resilience, refuge, and the space between departure and continuation.

Statement.

Rest and Become is a public sculpture conceived as a quiet act of grounding within the landscape. Created as a memorial to the Vietnamese refugee experience, the work does not attempt to represent a specific moment or narrative. Instead, it holds space for reflection; offering a place where stillness, resilience, and renewal can be felt rather than described.

The sculpture centres on the lotus, a form deeply associated with endurance and transformation. Emerging from water and sediment, the lotus carries meaning as a symbol of growth through adversity. Here, the flower and leaf are brought together as a unified presence, resting upon a stone base that anchors the composition both physically and symbolically.

The arrangement evokes the idea of a small island: stable, contained, and safe. This sense of refuge is central to the work. It suggests a threshold between movement and pause; a place of temporary arrival within a larger journey.

Material plays a significant role in reinforcing this intention. The bronze lotus forms carry a quiet permanence, their surfaces designed to soften light and gradually evolve over time. The granite boulder, natural and weight-bearing, grounds the work in the physical world. Together, these materials create a dialogue between the organic and the enduring, the shaped and the found. The contrast is subtle but deliberate, reflecting the coexistence of fragility and strength.
